Pepper Chicken Gravy is very easy to prepare and doesn't take much time. This recipe has been passed on by my mom, and its one among my favorites. Its my go to recipe whenever I want to prepare quick chicken dish. You will never get disappointed with this recipe.
Preparation time: 15 mins
Marination: At least 1 hour
Cooking time: 20 mins
Serves: 7-8
  • Chicken: 1 kg
  • Oil: 3 tbsp
  • Green chilly: 4-5
  • Onion: 2 Medium sized
  • Pepper powder: 1 tbsp
  • Coriander powder: 2-3 tbsp
  • Curry leaves: Handful
  • Soy sauce: 2-3 tsp
  • Vinegar: 2 tsp
  • Water: 1 cup
  • Salt: to taste
  • Coriander leaves: for garnishing
  • Vinegar: 2 tbsp
  • Chilly powder: 1 tsp
  • Salt: 1/2 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder: 1/2 tsp
  • Cut chicken in to small pieces. Marinate it with the ingredients mentioned under marinade for at least 1 hour.
  • Slice onion and green chilly.


  • Heat 3 tbsp oil in a pan.
  • When the oil is hot add onions. Fry till it becomes brown.
  • Add green chilies and curry leaves. Cook for a minute.
  • Add chicken. Mix well, then close lid and allow it to boil. Do not add water.
  • After about a minute, open lid, there will be some water from the chicken usually. If there is no water, add about half a cup of water and allow chicken to cook again with lid closed.
  • After the chicken is half cooked add coriander powder,vinegar,soy sauce and add salt to taste.
  • Add a cup of water and close the lid and allow it to boil.
  • Once done add pepper powder and mix.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves.

Steps with pictures:
Heat onion, add green chilly, curry leaves and the chicken.
Then add coriander powder, soy sauce, vinegar, salt.
Add water and boil. Finally add pepper powder.
