Preparation time : 10 mins
Cooking time : 30 mins
Serves : 5-6 

Ingredients:
  • Toor dal / Lentils : 1 cup
  • Tomato : 1 large
  • Green chilies : 3
  • Onion : 1 small sized.
  • Turmeric powder : 1 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil : 4 tbsp divided
  • Red chilly : 2 
  • Garlic flake : 1
  • Cumin seeds : 1/2 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds : 1/2 tbsp
  • Curry leaves : 6-7
  • Asafoetida : 1/2 tsp
  • Water : 3 cups divided
Preparation:
  • Chop onion, tomato and slice green chilies.
  • Crush garlic flake.
  • Wash and clean toor dal.
Method:
  • In a pressure cooker, add toor dal with 2 cups of water and also add sliced  green chilies, chopped tomato, turmeric powder and salt.
  • Close and lid and cook. After 6-7 whistles, light of the fire and then allow the pressure to settle down.
  • Meanwhile in a pan, add 2 tbsp of oil, when the oil s hot, add chopped onions and fry till it becomes brown.
  • Now open the pressure cooker, mash the dal and add fried onions.
  • Add 1 cup of water and mix well. 
  • If you need more salt , add little more.
For the Tadka:
  • In a small pan, heat 2 tbsp of oil.
  • Add mustard seeds, when it crackles add cumin seeds.
  • Heat for sometime and add curry leaves , crushed garlic, red chilies and asafoetida
  • Heat for about a minute, then add this to the dal.
  • Serve hot with rice

Steps with pictures:

Toor dal, tomato, green chilly, Salt and Turmeric powder in pressure cooker and after cooking
Mash the dal, Heat onion in other vessel. Mix both.

For the tadka, fry Mustard seeds, cumin seeds, Garlic, curry leaves and Red chilies in oil.
Serve hot with rice
