Upma or Uppittu or Sajjige is a South Indian breakfast dish prepared using Semolina ( rava) .
Preparation Time: cooking : 15 mins
prep : 5-10 mins
Serves: 3-4
Ingredients:
Semolina(Rava): 1 cup
Mustard seeds:1 tsp
Ginger: grated 1/2 tsp
Cumin seeds : 1/2 tsp
Onion: finely chopped ( 1 small)
Green chillies: 2 chopped
Vegetables : Carrot (chopped) and green peas
Grated coconut: 2 tbsp
Oil: 2-3 tbsp
Curry leaves: 1 sprig
Cashews: 5-6 (optional)
Salt: according to taste
Preparation: 5-10 mins
Method: 15 mins
Usually served along wiith coffee or tea, can also be served with AvalakkiPreparation Time: cooking : 15 mins

Cashews: 5-6 (optional)

Preparation: 5-10 mins
- Chop onions and green chilly into fine pieces and keep aside
- Take carrot and make medium pieces.
- Grate ginger and coconut and keep it ready( can get grated packets in grocery shops)
- Roast cashews and keep aside ( optional)

- Dry Roast semolina (rava) till it turns brown and keep it aside.
- Take a Wok , add oil and heat it
- Now add Mustard seeds and wait till they sputter.
- Then add Cumin seeds followed by ginger , curry leaf and green chillies.
- Now add finely chopped onions and saute it till it turns brown( slight).
- Add carrot and Green peas and then add water( 2 cups), mix
- Allow it to boil for 2-4 mins
- Add roasted rava and keep mixing constantly so that no lumps are formed
- Keep mixing till all water disappears and then add grated Coconut and cashews
- Upma is ready , and garnish as you like.
(But my favorite combination was with mashed banana and that can be little messy . )
Note: Make sure green peas is cooked properly ( can use pressure cooker to cook green peas and then add it to upma)
